Duties and Responsibilities
The internship is located in the Dakar Hub of the United Nations Development Coordination Office (DCO) Africa. The Dakar Hub supports Resident Coordinators and United Nations Country Teams across North, West and Central Africa, including on integrated policy, regional coordination, prevention and resilience, sustainable development, and cross-border and regional initiatives. The intern will report to a Senior Programme Management Officer within DCO Africa Dakar Hub and work closely with regional and country-level colleagues supporting coordination, analysis, partnerships, strategic planning and inter-agency engagement. Responsibilities Under the direct supervision of the Senior Programme Management Officer, the intern will support the work of the Dakar Hub, including in relation to Sahel and Gulf of Guinea (GGC) regional support. Responsibilities may include: • Supporting research and analysis on regional political, socio-economic, humanitarian and development trends; • Assisting in the preparation of briefing notes, presentations, background papers and meeting summaries; • Supporting coordination with Resident Coordinator Offices (RCOs), UN entities and regional partners; • Assisting in the organization of workshops, consultations, webinars and regional meetings; • Supporting tracking of regional initiatives, joint programmes and integrated policy work; • Assisting with knowledge management, data compilation and preparation of communication materials; • Supporting follow-up on regional priorities related to prevention, resilience, sustainable development and cross-border cooperation; • Performing other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent), c. Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent. Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite). Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Preferred areas of study: Advanced university studies (Master’s degree or final year of Bachelor’s degree) in International Relations, Political Science, Development Studies, Economics, Public Policy, Peace and Conflict studies, Social Sciences or related fields. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Fluency in English and French is required for this internship. Knowledge of another UN language would be desirable.
