Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The Climate Change Division delivers effective strategic guidance and high-impact action in support of the transition towards climate stability. Its work is guided by ambition, innovation, credible science, and alignment to global climate goals and needs of individual countries. The Climate Change Division works with Members States and Partners to accelerate and support a just transition by addressing climate change mitigation and adaptation through enhancing implementation capacity, provision of data information and knowledge, access to finance and technology, and building resilience. This consultancy is in the Sustainable Investments Unit, Mitigation Branch, Climate Change Division, Paris duty station. The Sustainable Investments Unit’s mandate is to mobilize and accelerate investments to increase the ambition for climate mitigation action and climate resilient development through a just energy transition, thereby supporting countries’ shift to a low-carbon development pathway. The Digital Demand Driven Electricity Networks Initiative (3DEN) is a collaborative effort between UNEP, the International Energy Agency (IEA), and the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, launched in 2021. It supports the modernization of power systems in emerging and developing countries by accelerating the deployment of digital technologies that enable smarter electricity networks, demand-side flexibility, and more resilient energy access. The initiative provides a platform for country-level diagnostics, technical assistance, knowledge sharing, and capacity-building to improve energy system efficiency, reliability, and sustainability. The consultant will support the implementation and scaling of 3DEN by contributing to programme coordination, stakeholder engagement, and delivery of project activities across participating countries. This includes supporting the selection of project proposals and their implementation. Further, the consultant will support the dissemination of lessons learned, best practices, matchmaking and data generated through pilot projects, which are central to informing policy and scaling impact. The consultant will also support public outreach, communications and community engagement support, working closely with the Unit’s Communications Specialist on targeted activities. The work contributes to UNEP’s Climate Stability Outcome: Countries and stakeholders have increased capacity, finance, and access to technologies to deliver on the adaptation and mitigation goals of the Paris Agreement.
