Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) within the Department of Peace Operations (DPO), based in New York. The incumbent will work primarily in the Policy, Advocacy and Donor Relations and Outreach Section (PADROS), while also supporting the work of the Office of the Director of UNMAS as required. Established in 1997, UNMAS works to eliminate the threat posed by mines, explosive remnants of war and improvised explosive devices by coordinating United Nations mine action, leading operational responses at the country level, and supporting the development of standards, policies and norms. UNMAS operates under legislative mandates of both the General Assembly and the Security Council and responds to specific requests for support from the Secretary-General or designated officials. Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties: • Gathers, selects and analyses information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press. • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political issues, in general, and in particular as they affect mine action. • Keeps abreast of latest trends and developments in the area of mine action and provides inputs on issues to senior officials and colleagues in missions and elsewhere in the Secretariat. • Monitors national and regional level developments and provides advice to field mission/UN agencies active in mine action on the ground. • Provides technical and substantive back up in the implementation of mine action mandates. • Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and governments on coordination and policy matters. • Monitors actions taken by intergovernmental groups, UN organisations, government and non-governmental organizations in the mine action sector. • Selects, classifies and stores in computerised databases information relating to mine action. • Participates in fact-finding and other missions to countries within assigned area of responsibility. • Participates in provision of secretariat services to the Inter-Agency Coordination Group for Mine Action (IACG-MA), negotiating bodies, conferences, meetings, and /or special missions. • Prepares meetings of the USG and Director Mine Action with officials from countries under the Organization's purview. • Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. • Performs other related duties as required.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area is required. Two years or more of experience in mine action is desirable. Experience coordinating inter-agency and inter-governmental processes is desirable.
