Duties and Responsibilities
Background and Organizational Settings: The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The mission of UNEP’s Office of Science is to deliver authoritative, integrated and coherent science to inform action and guide policy processes addressing the interconnected environmental challenges with a renewed emphasis on solutions and impact, as well as a service delivery orientation. The specific functions of the Data Analytics, Statistics and Intelligence Section include, but are not limited to supporting environmental decision-making by providing data, analysis, and forward-looking insights. Duties and responsibilities: The Intern will report to the Programme Management Officer in the Data Analytics, Statistics and Intelligence (DASI) Section. The intern will support ongoing work related to data analytics and digital tools, including contributions to a foresight platform and related analytical workflows. Tasks will include: • Assisting with data management, and structured analysis using tools such as Python, or similar. • Supporting development and improvement of data visualizations and dashboards. • Assisting in organizing and integrating datasets for analytical use. • Supporting testing and refinement of platform features, including data and user interface components. • Assist in conducting research on emerging AI trends, tools, and best practices relevant to Foresight. • Contributing to exploratory work on AI-enabled approaches (e.g. trend analysis, text analysis, or signal detection), under supervision. • Conducting research on data sources, analytical methods, and emerging technologies. • Supporting documentation of data processes, workflows, and methodologies. • Assisting in preparation of technical inputs to reports, presentations, and briefs.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: a) Be enrolled in a graduate school Programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher). b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). c) Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year of graduation. As well as: - Be computer literate in standard software applications. - Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. - Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Field of study: web development, computer science, information technology, data science or another related field is required. 1. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. 2. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, master’s or PH.D. Programme, preferably in the area of a relevant domain and experience with AI tools or technologies. Do you meet any of the above criteria? Knowledge of data science analysis tools (e.g. Python, or similar) is required. 4. Understanding basic concepts in data analytics and statistics is required. 5. Familiarity with artificial intelligence or machine learning concepts is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
