Duties and Responsibilities
Purpose Background The ICT and Development Section (IDS), within the Information and Communications Technology and Disaster Risk Reduction Division (IDD) of ESCAP, is dedicated to bridging the digital divide and accelerating digital transformation across the Asia-Pacific region. By leveraging the Asia-Pacific Information Superhighway (AP-IS) platform, the Section promotes regional digital connectivity, the adoption of innovative technologies, and the strategic use of digital data. To advance these objectives, IDS conducts evidence-based analytical research, delivers capacity-building programmes, provides demand-driven regional advisory services, and facilitates intergovernmental policy dialogues for member States and partner organizations. Duties and Responsibilities Organizational Setting and Reporting The internship at the ICT and Development Section is from two months and up to six months. The internship is unpaid and full-time. Prospected interns are supposed to work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member of the Section in the office to which they are assigned. Daily tasks are tailored to the intern’s academic background, the Section’s current priorities, and the duration of the internship. Duties include, but are not limited to: • Analytical Research: Assisting with research on ICT and digital agendas for sustainable development. This includes contributing to flagship publications like the Asia-Pacific Digital Transformation Report, covering themes such as digital connectivity, data statistics, disaster risk reduction, environment, education, gender, and media. • Data Analysis: Compiling and processing socio-economic data related to ICT development, with a focus on Countries with Special Situations (LDCs, LLDCs, and SIDS). This may involve the application of econometric skills and economic modeling. • Programme & Project Support: Assisting officers in the implementation of regional projects and initiatives designed to enhance digital infrastructure and data usage across member States. • Website & Communications: Supporting the maintenance and promotion of Section activities on the ESCAP website to ensure visibility and engagement. • Event Coordination: Providing logistical and substantive support for intergovernmental meetings and regional workshops. Tasks include drafting concept notes and memos, coordinating with participants, and developing session programmes. • Administrative Support: Performing other substantive and administrative duties as requested by the Chief of Section or the Division leadership.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). Applicants: • are not required to have significant work experience for the internship; • are recommended to have ICT knowledge in standard software applications; • have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter; and • have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required for the Internship Programme. Knowledge of another official UN language such as Chinese and Russian is an advantage.

Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
