Duties and Responsibilities
This internship announcement is valid for one (1) candidate who will intern in the Guided Tours Unit (GTU), Visitors Services Section. Visitors Services is part of the Outreach Division, Department of Global Communications in New York City, which engages and educates people and their communities worldwide to encourage support for the ideals and activities of the United Nations. The Visitors Services Section interfaces directly with the general public to offer guided tours of UN Headquarters in New York and briefings with UN expert speakers, as well as a Public Inquiries counter where visitors can obtain information materials and ask questions. This internship is designed to be full-time and in-person in New York but could be adjusted to part-time based on the availability of the successful candidate, the nature of the tasks, needs of the Units and/or Section, and the discretion of the manager. Full-time interns work five days a week (35 hours) and part-time interns work less than 34 hours a week. This is under the supervision of a staff member in the Unit within the Visitors Services Section to which they are assigned, although they also support the operation as a whole. This internship is unpaid. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, the Unit to which he/she is assigned, and the period during which he/she undertakes the internship. Interns' responsibilities may include: • Assist in planning and organizing of outreach activities to educate the public about the UN's work • Assist in organizing guided tours, briefings, and events • Assist in researching for UN thematic issues • Assist in general office functions such as drafting articles and other communications, setting up and maintaining files/records and databases, organizing events, etc. • Assist in taking photographs and videos to promote Visitors Services • Assist in drafting media content for the Visitors Services' platforms • Assist in developing and implementation of revenue generating activities and products for visitors • Perform other duties as required
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the two following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent), or (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience; however, a field of study that is related to the type of internship is required. Good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word and MS PowerPoint, is required. Familiarity with new technologies such as VR/AR, AI, and others is desirable. Ability to take photos and videos, with basic knowledge of editing and retouching is desirable. Ability to draft short articles and/or social media posts including basic design skills such as Canva, Photoshop, etc. is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English is required for this internship. Knowledge of another official language of the United Nations is desirable.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
