Duties and Responsibilities
Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR has over 150 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, UNDRR guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyzes action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with UN Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community. This internship is located in the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), Communications and IT Section, Bonn, Germany. The Intern reports to the Web Officer in the Content and Channels team. This internship is designed to be in person and full-time (40 hours per week) but can be adjusted based on the needs of the successful candidate. The intern will support the Content and Channels team in the development of PreventionWeb — UNDRR’s flagship knowledge platform on disaster risk reduction — with a focus on digital analytics, user journey research, and the practical application of AI tooling to editorial workflows. Tasks will include: • Support the ongoing monitoring and reporting of web analytics (Google Analytics 4, Looker Studio) across UNDRR’s digital portfolio, helping to identify content performance trends, opportunities for improvement, and insights to inform editorial and product decisions; • Contribute to user journey and user experience research on PreventionWeb, including light-touch UX exercises, review of user feedback, and structured documentation of findings to inform content and platform decisions; • Assist with the practical application of AI tooling to editorial workflows — for example, supporting content tagging and metadata quality, evaluating search relevance, and testing prompt-based assistance for summarisation and abstract writing — and help document what works and what does not; • Publish and curate disaster risk reduction content (documents, events, news, policy, jobs) in PreventionWeb’s Drupal content management system, building fluency with the publishing pipeline that the analytics describe; • Identify content for social media promotion, participate in the dedicated weekly content meeting, and review web analytics to propose optimisations; • Assist in validating and maintaining source organisation profiles, and contribute to the ongoing development of PreventionWeb’s editorial guidelines; • Support other information management and web strategy tasks matching the candidate’s academic background
