Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Heating, Ventilation and A/C Technician (HVAC) Shop, Mechanical and Plumbing Unit, Plant Engineering Section (PES), Facilities and Commercial Activities (FCAS), Division of Administration (DOA), Department of Operational Support (DOS). The incumbent reports directly to the Foreperson of the Shop and also reports to the General Foreperson of the Unit. The Department of Operational Support was established to provide operational advisory services to operating entities across the Secretariat, including other departments, offices away from headquarters, field missions, and regional commissions. The Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS) operates the Headquarters complex, striving to provide effective and efficient planning, management, maintenance and operation for all existing physical facilities and assets at UN Headquarters, New York. FCAS also supports office and conference facilities, property management, travel and transportation services, archives and records management, mail and pouch operations, catering, giftshop and the United Nations Postal Administration.
Responsibilities
Within limits of delegated authority, the Heating, Ventilation and A/C Technician will be responsible for the following duties: 1. Under the direction of the General Foreperson of the Unit and the direct supervision of the HVAC Shop Foreperson, the TC-6 Lead Technician shall provide daily on-site leadership, technical direction, and coordination for junior technicians, and support personnel. Assigns, prioritizes, and reviews work tasks to ensure proper execution, safety compliance, and adherence to UN standards. When assigned as a “call man” the TC-6 Lead Technician must respond to phone and radio calls, properly schedule the BMS for last minute meetings and visit workspaces at times to meet with fellow staff members ensuring their satisfaction of a work order request. Models professional conduct, safety compliance, and high-quality workmanship for the HVAC shop. 2. Work independently to perform complex troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, and installation of all HVAC/R systems and related equipment throughout UN facilities. Diagnoses advanced electrical, mechanical, and refrigerant-related faults using troubleshooting procedures and diagnostic tools. Conduct field training, demonstrations, and technical coaching for junior technicians. Communicates effectively with supervisors, providing technical recommendations, condition reports, and improvement proposals. Ensures all work complies with UN safety rules, technical standards, equipment procedures, and applicable building codes. Install, maintain, and repair HVAC/R equipment including AHUs, FCUs, VRF indoor units, split systems, VAV boxes, unit heaters, exhaust fans, refrigeration appliances, and associated controls throughout the complex. 3. Coordinate with other trades, project teams, and contractors such as BMS, duct cleaning and handy men to ensure proper integration and timely completion of HVAC-related work. Reviews material needs, initiates requisitions, and verifies availability of necessary equipment, tools, and supplies. 4. TC-6 Lead Technician is responsible for performing all the TC-7 tasks in their absence, such as creating and closing work orders, requesting pricing for materials and writing up requisition forms. Performs other related duties as assigned by the Shop Foreperson or General Foreperson.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent Trade School Diploma is required.
Job - Specific Qualification
EPA 608 Universal Refrigerant Certification is required. OSHA 30-hr Construction safety certification is desirable or acquired within 6 months of hire along with the Organization's mandatory training. NYS DEC 7G cooling tower certification is desirable. FDNY Q-1 operator's license is desirable.
Work Experience
• A minimum of seven (7) years' experience in HVAC repairs and maintenance or equivalent is required. • Demonstrated experience working with building management systems (BMS) is required. • Experience with the installation, repair and maintenance of complex HVAC control systems, including diagnostic and repair of digital systems is required. • A minimum of five (5) years working in a commercial or industrial setting is desirable. • Experience supervising staff is desirable. • Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) is desirable.

The incumbent spends most of their workday on their feet, and/or standing on ladders; occasionally platforms and scaffolding are needed. It also requires accessing tight areas and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions to accomplish the tasks. Must maintain safety procedures at all times to avoid injury. Technician must be able to carry 40-50 lbs. at any given time. • The selected candidate will need to work in the UNHQ complex where excessive noise, dust, dirt and odors are prevalent and may require PPE. Sensory demands include exposure to the sounds associated with power tools and machines such as brazing, soldering, pipe cutting, drilling and construction sites. The incumbent can be exposed to sudden temperature changes and may experience cuts, burns, electrical shocks and respiratory ailments. • This is a full-time, 2nd shift role working 3 PM to 11 PM, Monday through Friday. The ideal candidate must be available for occasional overtime, including weekends for emergency repairs and for some preventative maintenance and alteration work.
