Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. As part of the current UNEP Medium Term Strategy (MTS) 2026 – 2029 and the Programmes of Work (PoW) 2026 – 2027 under Digital Transformations Subprogramme, it aims to harness digital innovation, data ecosystems and emerging technologies to accelerate delivery of climate stability, living in harmony with nature, land and water, and a pollution-free planet. It commits UNEP to strengthening the use of artificial intelligence tools for the environment, embedding analytics into the World Environment Situation Room (WESR), and expanding the Digital Accelerator Lab The primary purpose of the Power Platform Consultant is to support the United Nations Environment Programme’s Chief Digital Office (CDO) in the development, maintenance, and enhancement of software applications to automate UNEP’s business processes as part of the digital transformation strategy. The consultant will facilitate the CDO’s digital engagement with clients and various stakeholders, including, but not limited to, internal UNEP divisions, Offices, and the secretariats of the Multilateral Environmental Agreements This position is in UNEP's Chief Digital Office at the Nairobi duty station, with full office-based work. The incumbent will report to the Head of DevOps and the infrastructure Unit, with overall supervision by the Chief Digital Officer, and will be responsible for the following duties: 1. Participate as a team member in business automation initiatives to streamline work processes using platforms such as PowerApps, Power Flows, and Jira. 2. Develop detailed system schemas, data dictionaries, functional specifications, and user documentation. 3. Gather and document users' requirements and translate these into innovative digital applications; determine application systems integration and linkage issues. 4. Work as a team member of developers, particularly in implementing PHP and PowerApps solutions and related back-end MySQL, Dataverse, and MS SQL databases. 5. Maintain, upgrade, or enhance existing systems; troubleshoot and provide continuing user support. 6. Drafts correspondence and communications, including technical support communication and other related issues; coordinates with service providers as required and maintains and supports a portfolio of applications. 7. Keeps abreast of developments in the field; conducts research on new technologies and assists in implementing them. 8. Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications/special skills

High school diploma or equivalent is required for this position. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to one (1) for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher. Additional training and a technical or vocational certificate in information technology or other related areas are desirable. A minimum of three (3) years of experience in software development, Web application design and development, technical requirement documentation, or related areas is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to one (1) for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher. Work experience in Low-Cod/No Code application development, APIs, and DevOps are highly desirable..

Languages

Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Fluency in another official UN Language is desirable.
