Purpose

Under the immediate supervision of the Head, Russian Translation Section, the successful candidate will be responsible for a variety of translation, revision, terminology and research duties. Additionally, the incumbent will be expected to cooperate in a series of administrative tasks, as required by the Head of Section.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

    1. Translate and self-revise from English into Russian texts relating to the activities of the Organization including technical aspects (e.g. safety of navigation, ship construction, radio communications, marine environment protection, etc.) as well as legal or administrative texts. 

    2. Revise the translation work performed by external translators.

    3. Carry out the translation of IMO publications and ensure follow-up until final publication. 

    4. Carry out linguistic research and assist in compiling, developing and maintaining a uniform Russian  maritime terminology suitable for translation of the documentation issued by the Organization, in consultation with the Russian speaking countries and taking into account the terminology in use in the organizations of the United Nations system; and incorporating it into UNTERM.  

    5. When the circumstances so require, at the request of the Head of the  Russian Translation Section: 

    • Organize and coordinate the work of teams of external Russian translators and monitor progress of such work in accordance with an agreed schedule. 

    • Guide and train external translators and trainee translators and revisers. Grade tests of candidates for employment, including prospective contractual translators. 

    6. Deputise for the Head of the Russian Translation Section  in their absence. 

    7. Take part in night shifts during meetings, if needed, and travel on missions as necessary.

    8. Keep abreast of developments in computer-assisted translation and terminology tools (CATT) in order to promote their use within the Section. 

    9. Assist in the recruitment of regular and temporary staff for the Section.

    10. Perform other duties as required by the Head of the Russian Section.

    Required Competencies

    1. Demonstrated ability in organizing heavy workloads and working under pressure to meet tight deadlines.
    2. Ability to coordinate the work of others and to work as part of a team in a multicultural environment.
    3. Proven ability to draft in correct, clear and concise language.
    4. Thorough and meticulous attention to detail, ensuring accurate and timely delivery.
    5. Demonstrated ability to conduct research on terminology with a high degree of initiative and judgement.

    Professional Experience

    At least seven years of professional experience in translation, of which preferably two years are self-revised, is essential. Experience in revising translation work performed by other translators is essential. Experience within the framework of an international organization would be an asset. 

    Education

    Advanced University degree (Master's equivalent)* in modern languages, linguistics, translation or a related discipline.

    *A first-level university degree with four additional years of experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

    Language Skills

    Proficiency in Russian, which should be at the native-speaker level or principal language of education, and English, is essential. Knowledge of other UN languages is an advantage. 

    Other Skills

    Good working knowledge of standard MS Office applications and ability to work with computer-assisted translation and terminology tools (CATT), such as eLuna, is essential. Knowledge of maritime terminology would be an asset. 

    Contract Information

    Fixed-term for two years (first year is probationary) with the possibility of further extension, subject to satisfactory performance.
